Our History

Our Common History

The town of Hingham was first dubbed "Bare Cove" by the first colonists from Hingham, England in 1633, but two years later was incorporated as a town under the name "Hingham". The eastern part of the town split off to become Cohasset in 1770.
During World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt authored a book entitled This is America, which used Hingham as an embodiment of the typical American town. As part of her research for the book, she toured Hingham's Main Street, with its stately 18th- and 19th-century houses and, at the time, a canopy of elm trees. Mrs. Roosevelt later concluded in the book, "[T]his is the most beautiful Main Street in America."

Main Street Market & Deli

This location's long established business success began in the early 1800's as a local bar before its transformation into a butchershop approaching the turn of the century. Finally, in the 1940's, the business took on its role as the local general store.
Mr. Connor Houde recently took ownership of this beautiful and historic Market just off the Hingham Town Green. With an eye on tying all of the location's original elements together into one common entity, Connor has livened up the butchershop and watering hole elements in the store, offering the finest selection Hingham can offer of premium deli meats, cheeses, wines, beers and cigars all under one roof, without neglecting the everyday products that you need on a regular basis.
